Abdul Ghani is 45 years old and has been working at the Karachi American School as a pool attendant and electrician for the last 20 years of his life. Earlier in his time at KAS, he worked as a pool attendant and a lifeguard for 18 years, but for the past 2 years, he has been training and working as an electrician on campus. While he was a pool attendant and lifeguard, Abdul Ghani would help maintain the daily sanitization of the pool; attending to the often overlooked details such as chlorine and heat levels. As well as keeping the pool safe and clean, Abdul spent much of his time giving swimming classes to younger students who wished to learn. As an electrician, Abdul says he enjoys his work and is always trying to learn all he can from his peers and through experience, never hesitating to have a new experience that will help him in his work.

Around campus Abdul helps with lighting, air-conditioning and any other general electrical problem on campus. He says that the school has given him a lot; he learnt to read and write Urdu in this school and also learnt enough English to have a rudimentary conversation. Abdul supports his wife and three children by working at KAS and works hard all day to be able to provide them with all they have. I admire Abdul as he has the right attitude towards his work. He can be seen around campus with a cheery smile on his face as he does his job and always greets me with a warm smile and a cheerful salam. I think we can all learn from Abdul and others like him that though we may not have everything we would like to, if you work hard, life can still be enjoyable.
